Raleigh 8th grader dies following complications from flu, family says

RALEIGH, N.C. — The flu outbreak has taken the life of an 8th grade girl in Raleigh.

Skyler McCardle died Friday at Duke Hospital. Her family posted the update on their Caring Bridge page.

They said she was a cheerleader and was once the manager for the girl's volleyball team.

Friday, South Carolina health officials said 10 more people have died from the flu, but only two were from last week.

There have been 39 flu deaths in South Carolina this flu season.

In North Carolina, 13 more people have died from the flu last week. Skylar's recent passing now brings the number to 69 deaths this season.

A North Carolina doctor told Channel 9 we are hitting the peak of the season. He said the season started off slowly with very few cases through early January.

But now, he said his clinic is very busy and the rise in cases have been dramatic.
