Increase in “Pink Eye” cases reported in Quintana Roo, Mexico

Posted: Monday, February 25, 2019. 4:13 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The Ministry of Health today informs that it is aware of an increase in the number of Conjunctivitis cases (more commonly known as “Pink eye”) in Mexico, particularly in Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

According to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System of the Ministry of Health of Mexico, since the start of this year up to February 5th, Yucatan and Quintana Roo have recorded double the cases at this same time compared to last year.

While at this time, the Ministry is not seeing an increase, persons are advised to monitor the situation, especially in the northern districts; keep updated through Ministry of Health advisories; and to continue proper hand-washing etiquette, which includes washing hands often with soap and clean running water to reduce the spread of this infection and any other contagious illness.

Pink eye can be caused by a bacteria or virus which can spread easily from person to person. Symptoms of Pink eye include redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid, and watery eyes.

Persons who believe they have been exposed to Pink Eye are asked to seek medical attention at their nearest health facility and try as best as possible to limit physical contact with anyone who is suspected of having it.

The Ministry is keeping close watch on this situation and remains in contact with health authorities in Quintana Roo and Yucatan, Mexico.
