VISITORS have been urged to stay away from York Hospital following another outbreak of norovirus.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust announced this morning that an outbreak of the vomiting bug had been reported, and called on people to avoid the building if possible, to prevent further spread of the problem.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed at 10.30am that two wards at York Hospital and two wards at Scarborough Hospital had been closed by norovirus, but reviews would take place throughout the day and this figure could change.

A statement on the hospital website said: "Please stay away from our hospitals if you have signs or symptoms of the norovirus, and do not visit until you have been clear of symptoms for at least 48 hours.

"Norovirus, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, is one of the most common stomach bugs in the UK. It's also called the ‘winter vomiting bug’ because it's more common in winter, although you can catch it at any time of the year. Norovirus can be very unpleasant but it usually clears up by itself in a few days."

Last month, The Press reported restricted visiting had been enforced by the hospital for only the second time in its history to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
