Stay indoors, drink more water
KOTA BARU: The public is advised to cut down outdoor activities and drink more water. Kelantan Health Director Dr Zaini Hussin said small children and old people should stay indoors during the current hot spell.

“If they have to go out due to important reasons, they must protect themselves from the heat by using umbrellas, caps and other items,” he said.

“Those who are suffering from chronic diseases are also advised not to go out and must be more careful during this hot season.”

He urged the public to ensure that they were drinking enough water to protect themselves from the heat.

The Meteorological Department stated that the sweltering heat that has enveloped many parts of the country is expected to last until the end of next month.

It said the hot weather was a normal occurrence that marked the end of the monsoon season.

It is accompanied by low rainfall, with temperatures expected to soar to between 34°C and 36°C, instead of the normal 32°C to 34°C.

In KENINGAU, Fire and Rescue Department for Keningau zone advised people, especially farmers, not to do open burning during the dry season.

Head of the zone, Yuszaimi Hairrul Azuan Juatan said, if there has to be burning, ensure that the fire is under control.

“Following the drought in this area, some forest fires and bushes have taken place and such incidents should be addressed especially by farmers who do the plantation work,” he told Daily Express when contacted.

He also urged the public to ensure that cigarette butts are not thrown everywhere, especially on dry grass.

Yuszaimi also urged the public to report at once if there were forest fires and weeds burning in their place so that the department could extinguish them and won’t spread to nearby areas.

He also advised the public not to stay out in the open to prevent hydration or heat stroke due to increase of the body temperatures.

The Fire and Rescue Department Headquarters in Putrajaya has issued a warning so that the public will be alert to the heat wave that has hit the peninsula in the past few days.

“The warning issued by the department that according to MetMalaysia, the El-Nino situation is expected to be formed and continue until May 2019 with a probability of 65 per cent while throughout February, most places in Peninsular Malaysia are expected to receive relatively dry weather with less than 150mm rainfall in some states including Sabah and Labuan.

“Usually this will continue until the end of the Northeast Monsoon expected in March 2019,” he said.

In this regard, Yuszaimi recommends that people continue to drink more water during the day.

Meanwhile, farmers especially in Bingkor have not started planting paddy due to the prolonged drought.

Assemblyman Robert Tawik said the Bayoyo river which is the main source of water to paddy fields in Bingkor has become smaller due to the drought..

Robert was informed by the District Water Engineer that Bayoyo river water level was very small due to drought.
