A skunk has tested positive for rabies in the Town of Vienna.

The Oneida County Health Department says the skunk was sent to the State Department of Health Wadsworth Center for testing, where positive results were reported on Tuesday.

They say a Vienna resident came in contact with the skunk and was immediately started on rabies Post Exposure treatment, which is a post-exposure vaccine given over a 14-day period.

It's the third animal in Oneida County to test positive for rabies in the last two weeks.

A rabid skunk was found in Vernon and a fox in New Hartford tested positive for the virus.
