46 treated after poisoning at Kabokweni butchery

A detailed inspection report revealed that the butchery is not in compliance with the requirements as outlined by the National Health Act.

Employees and some customers of Roots Butchery were taken to Themba Hospital after they were affected by chemicals used to unblock the drainage inside the butchery on Monday.

This is after Ehlanzeni District Municipality inspectors conducted an investigation with theĀ  Department of Health (Communicable Disease Control and Health Promotion Unit)

A detailed inspection report reveals that the butchery is not in compliance with the requirements as outlined by the Act. It highlighted the unsatisfactory conditions that need to be rectified.

According to the manager, Mr Nick Gomes, the problem started when they were trying to unblock the water drainage system which was blocked inside the butchery using chemicals without proper protective gear.

The district issued a prohibition notice to stop the butchery from operating from March 4 until the butchery’s conditions are safe for both customers and employees.
