Rabies confirmed in Martin County after dog attacked

Rabies in a wild animal has been confirmed in one Eastern Carolina county after a dog was attacked.

Martin County deputies say on Monday a raccoon attacked the dog in the area of Dan Peele Road near Bear Grass.

The dog's owner had killed the raccoon before deputies arrived.

Tests were done on the corpse and today state experts confirm that the raccoon was rabid.

Deputies say the dog who was attacked has already been quarantined and warned that anyone in the area who had recent contact with a raccoon to contact the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health Department immediately at 252-793-3023.

Pet owners are also being urged to make sure their animals are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
