78 cases, one death: Swine flu on a decline in Gujarat

Seventy-eight swine flu cases were reported in the state on Friday, with Surat city, accounting for the highest 21 cases, and two patients succumbing to the H1N1 virus.The state health department said that 74 cases were reported in the state on Thursday, while the number was 87 a day earlier.

State's health commissioner Jayanti Ravi said that cases were on the decline in the state. "Earlier, 500 cases were coming to light in a week, which went up to 700. Now, the cases have come down to 600, which shows that the number of cases are reducing," said Ravi.

Ahmedabad city, which has reported more than 1,100 swine flu cases this year, reported ten new cases today. This was the lowest number of cases in the city in more than a month.

Ravi also said that of the 112 deaths so far, only 22 were because of flu, as the remaining patients were also having other issues. "The death audit committee will meet over the next two days and analyse the seasonal flu cases and deaths," she said.

The senior official said that swine flu isolation wards have been set up in all district hospitals, and necessary medical equipment provided to deal with the situation. The health department has also started a 24x7 Fever Helpline 104.

The health department release said that two swine flu patients succumbed on Friday. With this, the death toll in the state since January 1 rose to 113. "Since January 1, 3,763 seasonal flu cases have been reported. Of these, 3,073 patients have recovered, and 577 are undergoing treatment in different government and private hospitals," release said.

Among other places, Vadodara reported nine swine flu cases today. It was followed by Sabarkantha, Anand, and Mehsana with four cases each, Bhavnagar and Bharuch with three each. "Ahmedabad rural, Amreli, and Valsad saw two cases. One case was confirmed in Kutch, Rajkot and other cities," the release added.
