Malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue are widespread across the world. If proper and timely treatment is not carried out, these can also turn out to be life-threatening. It’s because of this that there are so may research trials conducted every year to curb the menace spread by mosquitoes. Now, a new trial published in The Lancet journal has found that a mosquito-killing drug can reduce malaria among young children by 20 per cent. According to the research, drug ivermectin, commonly used to treat parasite infections like scabies and head lice, can kill the mosquitoes after they bite you since the drug makes your blood lethal to them.

When it comes to mosquitoes and preventing diseases like malaria, it is best to observe precautionary measures. One of the best ways to keep malaria away is by keeping your home and surroundings mosquito-free. While mosquito repellents are dime a dozen in the market, it is important to note that using them could give rise to health problems because of toxic chemicals in them. Camphor: Camphor is effective to keep mosquitoes away and to help your home smell pleasant. Just light up some camphor and leave them in your room with your windows closed. After 30 minutes, open your windows.

Essential oils: Strong-smelling essential oils can irritate mosquitoes and keep them away from your home. Just add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, citronella, neem and peppermint in an air diffuser. The fumes from these oils aren’t poisonous.

Make DIY mosquito-repellent creams: A mixture of certain oils when applied on skin works like mosquito repellent creams. Mix coconut oil and neem oil together and apply on your skin. You could also use eucalyptus oil and lemon oil. These have antiseptic and insect-repellent qualities.  They are anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial too. These oils are a much better option than buying chemical-laced store-bought mosquito repellent creams.

 Plant mosquito-repelling plants and flowers in your home: Plants like tulsi and odomos plant are very effective in keeping mosquitoes away. Citronella grass and lemon tree are also known to be effective in this regard.

Any water that’s stagnant is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  Make sure that you don’t let any water collect in flower pots, buckets or tubs. Water trays of air coolers should also be cleaned frequently.
