The number of flu-related deaths reported in Kitsap County since late February has risen to five, according to Kitsap Public Health District

All five people who died tested positive for influenza A and had underlying medical conditions. Three were adults who were younger than 65; two were 65 or older. One person was confirmed to have been vaccinated while the vaccination status of the other four was unknown, according to the health district.

“We want to express our sincere condolences to the families and friends of these individuals,” Health Officer Dr. Susan Turner said in a news release. "We also want to remind our community members in higher risk groups to contact their doctor right away if they begin to feel symptoms of the flu. Prompt antiviral treatment can be lifesaving.”

Positive tests for influenza and emergency department visits for flu-like illnesses remain elevated in the county this month. Some schools have reported a high number students staying home due to the flu, according to the health district. Five cases were confirmed at long-term care facilities in Kitsap as of March 9.

Flu symptoms can include days of fever, cough, sore throat and body aches. People at higher risk for serious complications from the flu include older adults, young children, pregnant women, people with underlying health conditions and American Indians.

Health officials recommend people in high-risk groups contact their health care provider if they develop symptoms. Those who do not have underlying health conditions should stay home, get rest and stay hydrated.

Flu vaccines are recommended as the best means to prevent the illness.
