An end to polio with Rotary

DOUGLASDALE – The Rotary Club of Randburg and Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club recently came together to host a dinner in support of the eradication of polio.

The fight against polio got a helping hand from Rotary recently when two local clubs hosted a Polio Awareness Dinner Dance.

According to the World Health Organisation, in 1988 a total of 125 countries in the world were affected by the contagious disease caused by the poliovirus which can result in a host of symptoms including damage to the nervous system, paralysis, difficulty breathing, and even death. In 2019, only three countries in the world – Nigeria, Afganistan, and Pakistan – still experienced cases of the illness.

The event was co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Randburg and Fourways Main Reef Rotary Club at the Douglasdale Retirement Village and formed part of the End Polio Now project.

End Polio Now is a project under Rotary International which has been working to eradicate the disease for the past 30 years. The event cost R160 to attend and all funds raised on the night went to eradicating polio.

Among the guests were a number of people who had survived the disease, as well as Rotary members from both clubs.
