Health Minister Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete has confirmed there’s been a sudden surge in Acute Febrile illnesses and flu cases in the country.

Dr. Waqainabete says Influenza is also epidemic in other parts of the world which he speculates climate change may be the reason behind this.

“Epidemics in the past have been very significant in terms of people losing their lives. I am pleased to say that not something like that has happened during this flu epidemic.”

Dr. Waqainabete says early detection and prevention against the current flu is the best way to treat it.

“We are currently dealing with Fijians who are affected with the flu. We have also raised issues around prevention so making sure that anyone who is sick visits the hospital as quickly as they can.”

The public has been advised to seek urgent medical attention if symptoms persist.
