Medical students to host annual charity gala

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) first-year medical students invite the community to mask up to celebrate the 22nd Annual Lubbock City Lights Charity Gala and Casino Night at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center, 2322 Mac Davis Lane.

This year’s Lubbock City Lights theme is Masquerade. The event will include a dinner, live and silent auction, casino tables and live performances by the Flying Fitness Aerial Arts Studio and the Texas Tech Ballroom Dance Team. All proceeds from the event and the auctions will go to four charities in the local community.

This year's charities are The TTUHSC Free Clinic, Voice of Hope, The Children's Advocacy Center of the South Plains and Lubbock Meals on Wheels.

Go Red for Women Luncheon this April

The Lubbock chapter of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women, along with presenting sponsor Covenant Health, will host the Go Red Luncheon on April 18 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center.

The luncheon will be preceded by a business and health expo, also at the Overton, from 9-11 a.m. Individual tickets are $75, which includes admission to the expo and lunch. Money raised at the event will benefit research grants, training and heart health community education.

This year’s keynote speaker is Ginger Zimmerman, two-time heart transplant survivor. Local survivor spotlight will focus on 17-year-old Annalise Winn. Born with a congenital heart disease, Winn has undergone four heart surgeries.

Parkinson's Aquatics class offered

Southwest Aqua Sports is offering a Parkinson's Aquatics class that is a suitable exercise for various stages of disease and eases symptoms of muscle spasms, contractures, rigidity, tremors, and postural instability.

The cost is $10 each class with the first one free. The class meets every Friday from 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Southwest Aqua Sports at 3909 N. Frankford Ave.

Although the classes are held in the water, swimming skills are not necessary to participate.

Brain injury support group offered

A monthly support group meeting for people affected by stroke and brain injury is available through Trustpoint Rehabilitation Hospital of Lubbock.

Members meet the second Tuesday of every month from 4 to 5 p.m. Light refreshments are served.

Meetings are open to survivors, their family members and caregivers.

Clinic, health department offer free vaccinations

The Free Clinic and the Lubbock Health Department have formed a partnership to offer free vaccinations every third Wednesday at Lubbock Impact, according to a news release from the Texas Tech’s Health Sciences Center.

Vaccines including pneumococcal, hepatitis A and B, influenza, TdaP (for tetanus, diphtheria and adult whooping cough), Gardasil (for human papillomavirus), meningococcal (for meningitis) and Zostavax (for shingles) will be available, according to the news release. Vaccinations will be available from 3 to 5 p.m. every third Wednesday at 2707 34th St.

The Free Clinic is an urgent care clinic run by Texas Tech’s Health Sciences Center School of Medicine physicians and medical students. Free basic health care is provided for the uninsured, homeless and working poor populations every Wednesday from 6 to 10 p.m., according to the news release. The Free Vaccinations Clinic Day will be open to patients 19 to 64 years old.

Those interested in receiving vaccinations are encouraged to take immunizations records, according to the news release. Call 799-4320 for more information.

Arthritis warm water exercise class offered

Southwest Aqua Sports will offer Aquatic Exercise Association’s Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program.

Classes meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 2 p.m. at Southwest Aqua Sports, located at 3909 N. Frankford Ave.

The cost to attend is $5 per class in addition to the entrance fee for the pool, which varies by age and membership, according to a news release from Ergo-Therapy and Wellness. The first class is free.

The class will be a warm water exercise program suitable for every fitness level. Swimming skills are not necessary.
