Supermarket chain Spar has been forced to recall its blueberry muffins because they may contain pieces of yellow plastic.

The presence of plastic could lead consumers to choke.

This safety risk makes the product unsafe to eat, so Spar and the Food Standards Agency have issued recall notices nationwide.

Anyone who has purchased the products should contact the store they bought the muffins from, and return them for a full refund immediately.

The muffins are dated best before April 19 2019 and are part of batch code 19049.

Point-of-sale notices have also been displayed in all retail stores selling the product.

Less than a year ago Spar had to recall containers of own-brand pesto amid fears they contained salmonella.

Prior to that the supermarket issued warnings to customers who had purchased Tikka chicken, as the store believed there was possibly glass contaminating the product.
