GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Guilford County has had three confirmed rabies cases in nine days.

First a fox, then a raccoon, now a dog just received a booster shot after killing a skunk on Saturday.

Fat Daddy has quite a bark, but the dog used his bite Saturday evening to kill a rabid skunk that wandered into his yard on Polona Court in Browns Summit.

His owner asked to not be identified, but he described what he saw that evening.

“He grabbed this skunk and started parading that it’s dead,” the dog’s owner said.

The owner tried to call animal control but got the weekend recording and did not realize he could call 911 for an on-call officer.

“You know you’re about to lose something that you love,” the owner said.

But Fat Daddy is fine, because the owner got in touch with officers just in time and the dog was up to date on his shots.

Animal control has advice for people concerned with the growing number of rabies cases.

“Have all your pets vaccinated. Don’t approach wildlife regardless of how friendly and cute they look,” Guilford County Animal Control Community Engagement Manager Lisa Lee said.

She said this case was a little concerning because it was the third in less than two weeks. Usually they see an average of one a month or less.

“Keep your dog current on their rabies shots. If not, your dog is gonna get destroyed,” warns Fat Daddy’s owner.

It’s something he feared would happen to Fat Daddy after losing another dog 15 years ago to a similar situation.

Guilford County Animal Control is helping pet owners take action. They’re hosting a rabies clinic April 13 at the Animal Shelter on Wendover Avenue.

One-year vaccinations will be $5 and three-year vaccinations will be $10.
