The topic of mental health in India has always been seen with a sense of diregard because of the taboos associated with it. However, despite the social conditioning and the prevalent prejudices, mental health awareness in the country has gathered a considerable attention lately. There has been an 80 per cent rise in the number of people seeking solutions to mental health problems in the country, especially in the tier-2 cities.

According to Practo's annual healthcare data, there has been an 82 per cent increase in the number of appointments with psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists. These were primarily in tier-2 cities including  Indore, Kanpur, Nagpur, Jaipur, Vishakapatnam, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad and Patna.

On the other hand, there has been a 24 per cent rise in such cases in tier-1 cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

People have been seeking help primarily with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), marriage counselling, stress, addiction and anger management.

A World Health Organisation (WHO) report mentioned that 7.5 per cent of the population in India is suffering from some form of a mental disorder or a similar concern.

According to the insights from the practo report, unhealthy lifestyle habits, long working hours and work-life imbalance are the cause of such issues.

The healthcare map has been compiled from thousands of searches and appointments  in 2018, conducted by over 13 crore people in over 50 cities and more than 250 specialties.
