Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez responded to allegations that she adopted a “southern drawl” when speaking to a black audience this week, saying she often speaks differently when at home in the Bronx. Conservative outlets criticized the Democratic star earlier this week for putting on what they called a “fake accent” to address a predominantly black crowd at the National Action Network’s convention in New York. Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter, calling the comments “hurtful” and writing: “As much as the right wants to distort & deflect, I am from the Bronx. I act & talk like it, *especially* when I’m fired up and especially when I’m home.”
