Mud Hens ring in the start of spring

April 9, 2019

With the trees blooming and the weather warming up, there’s a sign of spring in the Glass City. With such weather comes the kick off of the Toledo Mud Hens entering their 2019 campaign at Fifth Third Field.

The Mud Hens, a Triple-A minor league affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers, has been a staple of Toledo since 1883. The current version of Toledo’s baseball team came into existence in 1965.

Famous alumni of the Mud Hens include Minnesota Twins legend Kirby Puckett, Washington Nationals ace pitcher Max Scherzer and three-time MLB all-star Curtis Granderson. As a result of their wacky name, the Mud Hens also have a national identity as one of Minor League Baseball’s most well known teams.
The most famous reference to the Mud Hens in pop culture was M*A*S*H*’s Maxwell Klinger played by Toledo’s own Jamie Farr. In the show, Farr mentioned the Mud Hens were his favorite baseball team, wearing the “Block T” cap.

These games are played in series ranging from two games to four games. First pitch start times range from day games 10:35 a.m. or 1:10 p.m. while night games are either at 6:35 or 7:35 p.m.

Promotions throughout the year at Fifth Third Field include Rock N’ Blast on July 3, which features a 20-minute fireworks show after the game, and a Labor Day picnic Aug. 2.

The Mud Hens also offer popular theme nights such as Star Wars Weekend May 4-5 and Wizard Weekend June 1-2.

The always popular promo of Hens and Hounds, where fans can bring their dogs to the ballpark, comes to Fifth Third Field April 20, May 31, June 30, July 31 and Aug. 30. There is also a five-game Hens and Hounds ticket package that fans can buy.

The Hensville Entertainment District provides an atmosphere that any baseball fan can enjoy at the Holy Toledo! Tavern, Fleetwood’s Tap Room, Holy Toledo! Skydeck and Hensville Park.

Hensville is a relatively new addition to the revitalization of the downtown area.

Angie Koehn, a Toledo resident, says seeing the way downtown has evolved since she’s had her children makes coming to games even more enjoyable.

“Before I had my kids, it wasn’t like this,” she said of the Warehouse District. “It was still fun to come to the games. But you didn’t have all this action going on.”

The Mud Hens’ regular season runs from now until September 2
