Last year 1,668 cats and dogs were vaccinated during this 4 hour collaborative event. The cost of the rabies vaccination, tag and license is $15 per pet; cash only.
The event is open to residents of all parishes but only those residing in Orleans Parish will get a physical tag and license. Other parish residents will receive the vaccination at a reduced fee of $10 and must get the license and tag from their respective parish.
Rabies vaccinations are required by law for both cats and dogs and must be administered by a licensed veterinarian
The rabies virus is a deadly disease that affects the central nervous system and is most often spread by an animal bite. On average, less than 10 human rabies fatalities occur each year compared to about 100 in the late 1800s. The dramatic decrease in human rabies occurrences is due primarily to the immunization programs for cats and dogs, like the Palm Sunday Rabies Drive.
The Palm Sunday Rabies Drive is made possible by the continued efforts of the SLVA, City of New Orleans Fire Department, New Orleans Police Department and the Louisiana SPCA.
