Mozambique’s health and sanitation authorities have managed to curb the spread of cholera in the cyclone-hit port city of Beira, health officials said on Wednesday.
The city health director Fino Massalambane added that medical centres may be closed if the downward trend continues over the upcoming days.
“There used to be over 100 new cases a day, sometimes even more than 200, but now we are registering only one or two cases daily and some days zero”, he said.
The doctor added that the vaccination campaign has been effective, and the authorities expect to end the cholera outbreak in about four weeks.
The city of Beira has registered nearly 4,000 cholera cases which have caused three deaths since the disease started spreading on 27 March, in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai.
