With a rise in temperatures across the state, apart from human beings, birds and animals have also been suffering from health issues. According to the Parel-based Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, around 100 animals and birds have been admitted in a month's time, due to dehydration and jaundice within.
Dehydration is a major threat to the health of animals. Since March, around 100 animals and birds have been admitted to the Dinshaw hospital. Most of them are suffering from health problems such as dehydration, dizziness, and vomiting
According to sources in the hospital, the number of cases has risen since the last week of March. Birds are more affected in the summer season. Out of the 100 admitted, there are around 60 to 65 cases that involve birds such as pigeons, sparrows, kites, owls, crows and so on. More than 50 animals such as dogs and cats are being treated at the hospital.
Dr J C Khanna, secretary of the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, said, "Birds get dehydrated very easily. They keep on flying and due to loss of body fluids, they get dehydrated. Around 60 to 65 per cent of cases are of pigeons as the kabutar khana is nearby. That apart, around 20 kites have been treated in a month. They don't have any contagious disease. Thus, they were treated with antibiotics, glucose water, and multivitamins for a week."
In the past one and a half month, around 35 dogs were treated for diarrhoea and around 10 dogs were treated for jaundice, sources in the hospital said. Dr Khanna said, "Animals drink stagnant water and they get affected with diarrhoea and jaundice."
He further added, "A lot of pet animals are affected in this season. Pets usually have the habit of staying inside in air-conditioned houses. So, they find it difficult to adjust to the outside temperatures. When an animal or bird is sick, they should be immediately taken to a veterinarian instead of being treated at home."
Fresh water must be provided to birds and animals. Pet owners should reduce the quantity of feed, but must increase the frequency of the feed. People should keep a small water bowl outside their windows or balconies for birds and also keep changing the water.
