Officials warn of rabid raccoon found in Hall County

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — Hall County officials said a rabid raccoon has been discovered in the 5400 block of Jerry Burruss Road in Murrayville.

After contact between the raccoon and a dog, the raccoon was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab's Virology Section in Decatur. On April 26, Hall County Animal Control officials were notified that the raccoon had tested positive for rabies.

This makes it the third confirmed case of rabies in Hall County in 2019.

Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the raccoon was located. Anyone who lives in the area or who notices an animal acting abnormally in the area is advised to contact Hall County Animal Services at 770-531-6830. During non-business hours, contact Hall County Dispatch at 770-536-8812.

Animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate their pets for rabies. Vaccines are available at the Hall County Animal Shelter for $10 Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1688 Barber Road in Gainesville.
