After Rain, Flooding: The First Mosquitoes

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Flooding and warmer temperatures are expected to bring the first mosquitoes of the season.

Dave Zazra, with the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, said we need only a slight increase in temperatures, to about 65 degrees.

“We are seeing mosquito larvae in several areas and we have begun doing treatments of those area to prevent them from becoming adults,” he said.

The first to emerge will be nuisance flood-water mosquitoes, the ones that aggressively bite during the day.

"They can just really make for just a miserable experience of being outside.”

Aside from covering up and using repellent, Zazra said, now is a good time to get rid of anything holding water on your property.

That’s where mosquitoes that can carry West Nile prefer to breed.

They emerge a little later, after the nuisance mosquitoes.
