We’re now a few days into the month of May and we continue to deal with cool and wet weather. So far we haven’t seen that many bugs around but that could soon be changing and according to Bob Russell, an entomologist at American Pest Solutions, all the rain we’ve been getting could lead to an increase in the number of mosquitoes.
“We have excessive standing water, all the breeding sites that were great for last year are now full of water and eggs are going to be developing and as soon as we get that 70 degree reading two or three in a row we’re going to see significant hatching and development,” said Bob Russell, an entomologist at American Pest Solutions.
You should dump out water that may have collected in any objects in your yard. “If you have a significant pool of water you can treat it with some bacterial agents like the dunks as they call them. There are also insect growth regulators you can get,” said Bob Russell.
Mosquitoes can transmit germs and diseases when they bite. In Massachusetts the diseases linked to mosquitoes are West Nile Virus and Easter Equine Encephalitis.
To prevent yourself from being bitten there are sprays you can buy. Look for the ones that contain deet, they’re the ones that are most effective.
