UPDATE: 05/05/19

The city says Marietta city water customers will continue to be under a boil advisory until at least Monday evening.

Significant testing is being completed to ensure public safety.

The boil advisory cancellation will be communicated to all over WashCoALERT, social media, and local media outlets.

UPDATE: 05/04/19 11:59 P.M.

The City of Marietta says all water service in Marietta has been restored as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening.

The city says any customers who lost water service will be under a boil advisory until they're notified of a cancellation. About 70% of Marietta is under the advisory.

They say if you're experiencing discolored water, you need to flush your cold water for 15 minutes. If your service has not been restored or if you experience problems after flushing your line, call the Water Treatment Plant at 740-374-6864.

UPDATE: 5/4/19 6:15 PM

Crews have isolated water tanks feeding the break to the Marietta water main break at Marion and Third streets.

As a result, many Marietta residents may have water service interrupted.

Jeff Kephart, Superintendent of the Marietta Water Treatment Plant says that isolating the water tanks that were feeding the break has reduced the flow from the break significantly and that progress is being made towards a repair.

He assures that crews will be working through the night to have the problem resolved and service restored.

Kephart also advises that Marietta and Reno should still conserve as much water as possible.

The break happened around midnight on Saturday morning.

After more than 15 hours of water running down the street from a water main break on Marion and Third streets in Marietta, crews have still not successfully located the leak.

Amy Tucker of the City of Marietta issued the following statement:

"In order to isolate the water main break, crews now have no choice but to isolate the tanks feeding the break. This becomes an emergency scenario and will interrupt water service to most of Marietta, including downtown and Pike Street businesses. The North Hills area happens to be on a different system and will not be affected. Crews will be working through the night and will have service restored as soon as possible."

Earlier today, the city issued an emergency water conservation order:

“The City of Marietta Water Treatment Plant is asking all Marietta residents to conserve water to the greatest extent possible. Officials are attempting to isolate a water main break in our system. The water is safe to consume, but all Marietta City Water customers are asked to conserve water until further updated.”

That order has since been extended to Reno.

Crews are still working to isolate the problem in the waterline at Marion and Third streets in Marietta. Surrounding valves have been shut off to help crews better assess the damage to the line.

Water Plant officials say that they will issue boil advisories to those who need them when they have a better understanding of the full situation.

The Superintendent of the Water Treatment Plant believes that the break may have been caused by a few different factors.

“I think it’s the age of the pipe, the material, it’s cast iron and the annual flushing activity the day that this happened, it may have created a weak spot. It just popped on us,”says Superintendent Jeff Kephart.

Before 2 PM Saturday afternoon, it was estimated that the plant lost upwards of 2.5 million gallons of water.

The water conservation order to the area is still in effect.

The City of Marietta experienced a water main break at Marion Street and Third Street near Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Amy Tucker, the IT Manager Safety Services for the City of Marietta sent out the following emergency water conservation order:

“The City of Marietta Water Treatment Plant is asking all Marietta residents to conserve water to the greatest extent possible. Officials are attempting to isolate a water main break in our system. The water is safe to consume, but all Marietta City Water customers are asked to conserve water until further updated.”

As of 9:30 Saturday morning, the city’s Facebook page says that the water treatment plant is still on scene working to isolate the issue in the water line.

It continues to say that, as of that time, only customers who lost water completely are expected to be under a boil advisory once service is restored.

WTAP will have more information as it becomes available.
