Girls outperformed boys in this year’s Central Board of Secondary Education’s Class 12 examinations with a nine percentage point advantage in pass percentages. Overall, 83.4% of the 12.87 lakh students who attempted the examination held in February and March 2019 have passed, the CBSE said on Thursday.
While 88.7% of girls cleared the examination, only 79.4% of boys did so. Among transgender students, the pass percentage was 83.3%.
Joint toppers
The joint toppers — who scored 499 out of a possible 500 — were also girls, both from Uttar Pradesh.
For Karishma Arora from the SD Public School in Muzaffarnagar, her love for classical dance helped her take regular breaks from her books during the school year and also fits into her dreams for the future. “I want to do Psychology Honours and hopefully specialise in dance therapy,” she told The Hindu .
Favours Psychology
Her fellow topper Hansika Shukla from the Delhi Public School in Ghaziabad also wants to study Psychology, but hopes to become an officer in the Indian Foreign Service. “I never thought of marks, I just concentrated on giving my 100%. I was regular in my studies but I never counted the number of hours I put in. Closer to the exam, I kept away from social media,” she said.
In the category of children with special needs, the topper was Lavannya Balakrishnan of the Heritage School in Gurugram. Notwithstanding a hearing disability due to a bout of chicken pox when she was in Class 6, she scored a total of 489 marks and hopes to become a fashion designer.
Three girls also grabbed the second rank, and 11 out of 18 students in the third rank were also girls.
The best performing region was Trivandrum with a pass percentage of 98.2%. The Chennai region had a pass percentage of 92.93%, while in the Delhi region, the pass percentage was 91.87%.
Kendriya Vidyalayas
Students in Kendriya Vidyalayas achieved a pass percentage of 98.54%, while government schools as a whole had a pass percentage of 87.17%.
The examination began on February 16 this year, earlier than in previous years, and the results were also declared earlier than usual. Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar praised the CBSE team for declaring the results in “record time” and congratulated government schools for the good performance.
