HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Mosquitoes have been breeding since February, and now they’re starting to swarm.

For the last few months, the city of Huntsville and Madison County have been using fog trucks to get rid of adult mosquitoes.

Cheryl Clay, the Madison County Public Health environmental supervisor, says the department has been working hard to prepare.

“The point of doing it is to prevent mosquito-born illness outbreak. We’re not a private pest control service, so we certainly can’t guarantee no one will get a mosquito bite,” Clay said.

Clay says West Nile virus is their main concern this year, but there are ways to get ahead, by practicing the three Ds.

“Drain, dress and defend. Drain any standing water on your property, dress appropriately when mosquitoes are active, and also to wear CDC improved insect repellent,” Clay explained.

The Madison County Environmental Department says you can reach out to them for free inspections and investigations.

“We can find where they’re coming from, and that’s going to be the best way to help. The fog truck coming through is a temporary solution, but finding the source is a permanent solution.”
