A fox found last week in Lenoir County turns out to have rabies.

The Lenoir County Health Department says a concerned citizen contacted them last week about the fox's erratic behavior.

The rabid fox was found near Darden Drive, which is just south of Kinston.

An animal control officer captured the fox and also canvassed the neighborhood to see if anyone or their pets were exposed to the fox. None were found.

"We urge people to let the health department, the hospital, or their doctor know if they have been scratched or bitten by or have handled an animal that could be rabid," said health director Pamela Brown.

This is the first confirmed rabies case in Lenoir County this year.
