FLINT, Mich. -- A second case of Hand, foot and Mouth Disease has been reported on the Flint campus of Mott Community College.

A campus-wide email was sent out about the disease on Thursday.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a mild, contagious viral infection common in young children.

Symptoms of the disease include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Malaise, feeling unwell
  • Painful, red, blister like lesions on the tongue, gums and inside of the cheeks.
  • A red rash, without itching but sometimes with blistering on the palms, soles and sometimes the buttocks.
  • Irritability in infants and toddlers.
  • Loss of appetite.

The usual period from initial infection to the onset of symptoms is three to six days.

Frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who are infected with hand, foot, and mouth disease may help reduce the risk of infection.

Anyone who develops symptoms should see a doctor.
