BAREILLY: After the outbreak of malaria in the district last year, the health department has decided to soon start distributing two Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) to any family in which a patient is diagnosed with rare plasmodium falciparum (PF) malaria. LLIN are nets with insecticide coating, which are supposed to kill mosquitoes when they sit on the nets.
In April this year, 16 persons were tested positive with PF and 236 with plasmodium vivax (PV) malaria.
In 2018, a total of 17,425 patients were tested positive for PF malaria and 20,057 were detected with PV malaria in the district.
Dr Vineet Shukla, chief medical officer, said, “The state government will soon provide 500 LLINs to us. If any person is detected with PF, we will give two sets of LLINs to his or her family for free. As only few cases of PF have been detected currently, 500 LLINs will be enough for now.”
Last year, the officials here had demanded from the centre, through the state government, to provide 7 lakh LLINs. Sources said the matter is still pending.
Meanwhile, as the malaria cases are expected to go up in the mosquito-breeding season from July, officials here have written to the state government to provide more rapid diagnostic kits (RDTs) and medicines. According to sources, the health department in Bareilly currently has 4000 RDTs which is sufficient for a few weeks.
