Hands on the Arts

Young artists and makers can find inspiration at the 34th annual Hands on the Arts Festival, set for May 18 at the Sunnyvale Community Center. The multicultural arts event for children features over 35 hands-on activities or workshops led by professional artists.

The festival supports Sunnyvale’s STEM to STEAM initiative with workshops that integrate science, technology, engineering and mathematics with art.

Some workshops introduce children to art forms from different cultures, such as Indonesian batik painting, Japanese kabuto hats, Venetian mask making, Chinese calligraphy and Mexican Folklorico dancing.

Hands on the Arts also features a stage with family-friendly entertainment and a food court with kid-friendly fare.

The festival runs 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 550 Remington Drive. Tickets are $10 per child at https://activitiesregistration.insunnyvale.org or 408-730-7350.  Admission at the gate is $15.

Mosquito Awareness

Santa Clara County’s Vector Control District is reminding folks to be diligent about managing any stagnant water on their properties to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus.

To avoid spreading the virus, Vector Control recommends the public dump and drain any standing water in their yard, and report neglected or abandoned swimming pools, as well as dead bird sightings.

To report dead bird sightings, contact the state West Nile Virus Hotline at 1-877-968-2473 or visit www.westnile.ca.gov.

To report an abandoned swimming pool or mosquito activity, contact Vector Control at 408-918-4770 or visit SCCvector.org. Vector Control can also provide informational material or drop off free mosquitofish to take care of the little buggers.
