Irish food safety experts recall Cow & Gate product due to potential presence of blue rubber

The order comes after Cow & Gate found pieces of blue rubber glove in a batch of their Cheesy Broccoli Bake product

DANONE Early Life Nutrition is recalling the Cow & Gate Cheesy Broccoli Bake product from Boots Ireland outlets after the company said fragments of a thin blue rubber glove were spotted in some of its jars.

The UK-based dairy products company have said that although the affected jars don't pose a health risk, it is recalling them anyway as the product does not meet Cow & Gate's usual high standards.

A product recall notice issued by Cow & Gate said: "We are sorry that these jars do not meet our usual high quality standards and for any inconvenience this recall may cause.

"These jars do not pose a health risk, but we are recalling them as they do not meet our usual high quality standards."

The Irish Food Safety Authority (FSAI) have also asked Irish consumers not to purchase the product in an announcement on their website on Monday.

The message said: "Danone Early Life Nutrition is recalling the above batch of Cow & Gate Cheesy Broccoli Bake 10 months + Children (Stage 3), as some jars in this batch contain small pieces of a thin blue rubber glove.

"No other batches of this product or any other Cow & Gate products are affected by this recall. The implicated batch was sold by Boots Ireland only."

The product which is made in Poland is a 250g jar with a batch code of 101107743 and a best before date of December, 28 2020.

Customers are advised to look out for these details on Cow & Gate products they may have already purchased.

Irish product recall rights

KNOW what to do if you feel a product you have purchased is dangerous or unsafe.

WHAT WE DO
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is responsible for the safety of a wide range of non-food consumer products covered by five EU Directives and the regulations coming out of these. This includes toys, recreational personal protective equipment, domestic electrical and gas appliances and general consumer products such as furniture, children’s clothing, window blinds and cigarette lighters.

PRODUCT RECALLS
Sometimes a manufacturer or distributor will become aware of a fault in a product or in a batch of products and if they think the product is unsafe they are legally required to stop selling the product. They may also request consumers to return the product to them for repair, or provide a replacement or refund. This is known as a product recall. It’s not always possible for them to contact everyone who has bought the product directly, so you might see an advertisement in the paper or a notice in shops which sold the product about the recall.
We are responsible for the market surveillance and processing of non-food consumer product recalls in Ireland. If we believe that a product is a risk to the health and safety of consumers, we have the power to recall that product from the Irish market and we can prosecute a retailer if they do not comply.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A DANGEROUS OR UNSAFE PRODUCT

If you think a product is unsafe:

  • Inform the retailer. It may turn out to be a once-off faulty item in which case you are entitled to a repair, replacement or refund as normal
  • If you are still not satisfied about the safety of the product, contact us immediately with details about the product and where you bought it

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE BOUGHT A PRODUCT THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED:

  • Check if you are affected. Check the product recall details carefully for model numbers, batch numbers and the year of manufacture. It may be that just a specific batch is being recalled or it might just affect particular countries
  • Follow the instructions given in the product recall carefully

For further information on Cow & Gate products, Irish consumers can access the company's live chat here. Or alternatively, for general food safety information you can contact the FSAI on 01-817-1300.

Other recall notices to look out for include Little Willies veggie sausages sold in Tesco stores because they may contain bits of plastic.

Tesco have also pulled own brand cereal bars from shelves over fears they contain salmonella.
