ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) -- The Roanoke boy battling a rare, polio-like disease is still fighting, but his family said he's physically and mentally weaker.

Now, the president has stepped in to try and raise his spirits.

Camdyn Carr was diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis, or AFM, in August, leaving him almost completely paralyzed.

The CDC says there is no cause or cure.

Camdyn is only able to move one of his legs, partially one of his arms, one hand, and his toes. His mother said he's been battling depression.

For his 5th birthday, President Donald Trump sent him a letter wishing him an early happy birthday.

"We are delighted to wish you an early happy 5th birthday!" the letter read. "Your life is precious and your courage and strength are inspiring to us. Please know that we are keeping you in our prayers. May God bless you and keep you."

Family friends held a fundraiser last month for Camdyn, raising nearly $9,000 and there is also a GoFundMe page set up or you can send in donations to the Bank of Botetourt. On your checks, write "in care of" Steve Thrasher and Mary Taylor of the Buchanan Moose Lodge.

Camdyn is currently at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland with his father awaiting tests to see if he can get a diaphragmatic pacemaker to give him more of a normal life.

Some of the money raised also helps his mother and sister travel from our area to Baltimore to see him.
