Fear of cholera outbreak as six cases reported in Embu

Six cholera cases have been reported in Embu County.

Speaking to journalists, County Public Health Director Roselyn Kaugi has said that three patients have already been treated and discharged while the rest are admitted at an isolation ward at the Embu Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The patients are said to come from Kianjokoma, Don Bosco and Blue Valley estates of Embu town.

Health Director Roselyn Kaugi said the patients turned up at the hospital cholera symptoms that diarrhea, vomiting and stomachache and on being tested the diseases was confirmed.

She said the cause of the cholera has not yet been established but advised the public to ensure high levels of hygiene and sanitation to prevent the disease.

“People should ensure they drink treated or boiled water. Those handling food in public places such as hotels and schools should have medical examination licenses. We plan to reach masses at the village using community health volunteers who will teach people on hygiene and sanitation such as handwashing and using toilets,” she said.

She advised residents to report to the nearest health facility if they notice cholera-like symptoms.
