AUGUSTA — Augusta Independent School is participating in a global “give back” program that will provide scholarships to AIS students wanting to attend Circle H camp this summer.

AIS Superintendent Lisa McCane said the New Zealand Trade and Enterprise organization is encouraging communities to “give back” as a way to honor those affected by the recent Christ Church attack.

The event is a collaboration between AIS, the City of Augusta and local community and business leaders, according to McCane.

McCane said the information about the “give back” event was perfect timing, as the students had just finished visiting Circle H Farms.

“We had taken the students to the farm and then we found out about the give back project, so we decided to put together “Project Give Back to Circle H,” she said. “The project will help raise money for the farm while also helping the students.”

According to McCane, the project will consist of a painting party at the Augusta Pub on May 30-31, where patrons can pay $50 to paint a door hanger that they will get to keep.

The door hangers will include equestrian and Independence Day themed designs. The goal is to raise $2,000 that would send about 10-12 students to the camp over the summer.

“The cost is $150 for students,” she said. “That would include a week camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, a lunch and a snack. If we raise more money, we’ll be able to send more kids to the camp over the summer and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Circle H.”

McCane said the project came about after talking with someone involved in the global give back efforts.

“I happened to have a personal connection with someone involved with this and they said the bigger cities around the globe are participating,” she said. “They asked if AIS would be interested. We were looking for ways to get out more information about the (AIS) Educational Foundation. This will help our students, Circle H Farm and bring global awareness to the education foundation and Augusta as a whole. Circle H has three camps over the summer,” McCane said. “With this project, I believe they’re planning to open a fourth one. We just saw the importance of what they were doing there and wanted to give back to their camp, while also doing something good for our students.”

Any student interested in attending the camp over the summer can contact the AIS board office to have their name put on a list.

Those interested in participating in the painting party can contact the Project Give Back to Circle H Facebook event page to register. Checks should be made out to AIEF, INC.
