No new rabies cases reported in Zululand this week

NO cases of rabies were reported in Zululand during the week 11 to 17 May.

However, cases have been reported in the Izingolweni area under the uMuziwabantu Municipality (Ugu District) and Inanda in the Ethekwini District, where one puppy was found to be positive in each.

In the Eastern Cape, a goat and cow were found to be positive in the Matwebu Mbizana municipality (Alfred Nzo District) and another cow at Elliotdale in the Mbhashe Municipality of the Amathole District.

While eThekwini remains an extremely challenging rabies hot-spot, the entire eastern coast of South Africa is still considered a serious rabies threat.

A person, of whom details have not yet released, has been hospitalised in KZN with suspected rabies contracted in the Eastern Cape.

• Back in Zululand, rabies vaccination campaigns from State services continue to suffer huge challenges from the very real threat of hijackings.

It is your responsibility of owners to ensure pets are vaccinated at the nearest SPCA or State Vet office.
