SYDNEY, N.S. — The Nova Scotia Health Authority has issued a correction for information it provided on May 8 to the Cape Breton Post about the recent death of a young Cape Breton girl due to illness.

The NSHA now says the language in its statement should have been clearer. The Medical Examiner’s Office was notified about the death in question. However, following notification of a death, the Medical Examiner’s Office determines next steps. In this case, the office did not pursue further investigation under the Fatality Investigations Act. As is normal practice, the death was then certified by the attending physician.

Before sharing this statement, NSHA apologized directly to the family for the error, recognizing the confusion and hurt caused.

The girl died of meningococcal septicemia, which is not meningitis.
