Last week an overseas visitor to Victoria was confirmed to have measles. Today, six more people in Victoria have contracted the illness after contact with the visitor at two family events, bringing the total number confirmed cases for the year to 22.

Before the visitor returned to Vietnam, he visited areas in Moonee Ponds, North Melbourne, Coburg, Mount Waverley, Mornington, Williamstown and St Kilda.

The new confirmed cases all had community contact during their infectious periods (but prior to developing symptoms) in a number of locations, including the CBD, Geelong, East Malvern, Chadstone, Noble Park, Hawthorn, Oakleigh, Mount Waverley, Fairfield, South Wharf, Armadale, Abbotsford, East Melbourne, Baxter, Frankston, Karingal and St Kilda Road.

This group of six is the biggest linked cluster of measles in Victoria since an outbreak connected to Melbourne airport early last year, when nine people contracted the disease.

The Department of Health and Human Services is asking people to watch for signs and symptoms of the disease. It’s also urging future travelers to double-check their immunization status and before going abroad, where the disease is more prevalent.

Two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR) are necessary to be fully protected, but many adults have only received one. The majority of cases in Victoria this year involve adults who have only been vaccinated once.
