A state office has confirmed that a bat found inside a Longview home a week ago tested positive for rabies, according to the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center.

The bat was picked up May 16 and shipped to the Texas Department of State Health Services lab in Austin for testing.

The Longview Animal Services Department notified the resident who found the bat and implemented procedures to make sure people and animals in the home were safe.

The bat did not make contact with anyone inside the house, and their two dogs have current vaccinations, according to the center. The dogs will be administered booster shots and watched for the next 45 days, as required under Texas law.

Animal Services advises residents to refrain at all times from touching or handling any wild animals, especially those that appear sick or injured.
