MADURAI: A two-day rejuvenation programme on solid waste management for conservancy workers in Madurai corporation was inaugurated by corporation commissioner S Visakan on Friday.
Speaking at the event, the corporation commissioner said that the workers toiled from morning to evening and did a splendid job to keep the city clean. “Their work is one of the best services one can do for the nation.
A rejuvenating programme for these workers would help them to share their experiences and learn from each other,” he said.
He urged the workers to clear their work-related doubts without fear and assured them that their numerous demands would be fulfilled in a gradual manner. The workers were asked to ensure that they used safety equipment during work and encouraged residents to segregate waste into wet and dry waste.
The workers were advised to utilise the corporation’s medical services when they fall sick, while workers addicted to liqour or drugs should seek the help of the rehabilitation centres. The rejuvenation programmes will be held in eight phases and each phase would be conducted for two days. It will be conducted for 480 workers, with 60 workers in each batch.
Conservancy workers under the Madurai corporation would benefit from the programme. They will also be trained in segregation of different types of waste including wet, dry, hazardous and waste that can be recycled.
