HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu school that warned parents one of its pre-kindergarten students had measles is correcting that information, saying the child doesn’t have the highly infectious disease after all.

The principal of Daniel K. Inouye Elementary in Schofield Barracks said the erroneous alert was sent out of an abundance of caution based on what the parents reported.

But health officials subsequently said there was no measles case at the school. A follow-up letter will be sent to parents Tuesday.

Signs and symptoms of the measles include high fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes.

Health officials stress that measles can be prevented with the measles, mumps and rubella — or MMR — vaccine.

The school’s mistake comes as Samoa grapples with a deadly measles outbreak, and prompted a flurry of concern.
