Flu cases spike at Children's Hospital New Orleans
Children's Hospital New Orleans has seen a large spike in flu cases this year.
More than 1,400 cases have been reported so far this year compared to just nine cases last year.
"It's not due to people not getting the flu shot," said Dr. Leron Finger of Children's Hospital. "The flu season this year started several months earlier than any season in past years. When we started seeing cases of the flu, the flu vaccine for this year was not yet even commercially available."
Finger said the numbers match the peak that they saw in each of the last two years.
According to Finger, we are just now reaching peak flu season, from December to February, and sometimes through April.
This means the numbers could change for the better, or worse, according to Finger.
"If it starts to come down now, that would be fantastic," said Finger. "What we're all worried about is that it's going to continue to rise in frequency over the next several months."
Finger's advice is to get the flu shot.
