Belagavi DHO says no H1N1 cases reported in district
Belagavi: Rumours of a Belagavi city resident having contracted the H1N1 virus and being afflicted with swine flu have proved to be just that, rumours. Officials in the Belagavi district health department confirmed that no samples had been dispatched to virology institutes either in Manipal, Udupi or in Pune. But, as a precautionary measure, the department has issued a notice to its personnel to remain vigilant against a possible breakout.
Following reports of a case of swine flu being confirmed in Belagavi, anxiety gripped a section of residents.
However, as of Thursday evening, the Belagavi district health office has not received any confirmation. All private health institutions including the Karnataka Lingayat Education Society (KLE) hospital have been ordered to report positive cases of H1N1 to the competent government authorities.
A state-wide alert has been issued following detection of H1N1 cases being reported in parts of Karnataka. Most of these cases have been reported from the state capital, Bengaluru, and the officials in the district administration across Karnataka have been asked to leave no stone unturned in monitoring these cases.
Belagavi district health officer Shashikant Muniyal confirmed to TOI that no case of swine flu had been reported in the district this year. “These are just rumours. No case of H1N1 has been reported in the district,” said Muniyal.
He said that all primary health centres, taluk hospitals had been directed to monitor the health of those reporting with respiratory illnesses more closely. The key symptoms for swine flu have been classified into three categories: A, B and C. While minor breathing problems and regular cough are classified under ‘A’ and ‘B’ categories, and patients reporting to health centres with these symptoms will be sent home with medicines, personnel have been instructed to admit those patients complaining of more serious troubles.
Muniyal added that samples would be dispatched to virology centres if cases that arounsed genuine suspicion were reported in the district.
